International Meeting on the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation 2008

23-24 October 2008, Maputo, Mozambique

Background

The Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation was endorsed at the United Nations in New York in October 2005 by 22 international election observation organisations. Since the official endorsement ceremony, an additional ten organisations have endorsed the document.

Following the 2005 endorsement of the Declaration, annual meetings were held in 2006 and 2007 hosted by endorsing organisations: in London by the Commonwealth Secretariat (May 2006) and in Washington DC by the Organisation of American states (November 2007). Endorsing organisations have agreed that these annual meetings provide a useful and productive forum for the discussion of issues critical to the continued development of professional and credible election observation.

Purpose

The aims of the 2008 meeting were to:

  • provide a forum for discussion among international election observation organisations on persistent challenges to election observation; and
  • facilitate the ongoing development of a community wide agenda for fostering the integrity of credible international election observation.
