After relaunching its office in April 2018, with European Union financial assistance, EISA Mali identified five Civil Society Organisations it could support that would be able to focus on violence monitoring and mediation during the electoral processes around the presidential elections conducted in late July 2018.
Core mediators were given an orientation training on 12 June. In turn they trained traditional and religious leaders to secure their support in intervening in disputes within their areas.
EISA supported five CSOs in the recruitment, training and deployment of electoral and community mediators and establishing a co-ordination centre for monitoring violence and mapping potential areas of conflict. The intention was to deploy 420 grassroots mediators countywide and then to redeploy them in selected polling stations on election day, 29 July 2018. At the same time 9 national mediators were to be in place to intervene in high level disputes at political party leadership level.
