2010 Elections

Sudan gained independence in January 1956 after a mutiny by Southern Sudanese soldiers in 1955 was bloodily suppressed. The military government that seized power in 1958 followed a ruthless policy of Islamicisation of Southern Sudan. This provoked a civil war that raged, with a hiatus between 1972 and 1983, until the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 9 January 2005. In terms of the agreement the Southern rebels were brought into government, the South was granted autonomy, elections were set for 2009 to be followed by a referendum in the South on whether it should become an independent state or remain an autonomous region of Sudan. Transitional structures were appointed by the government, rebel groups and political parties in 2005 to steer the country towards the crucial democratic elections.

In 2007 EISA undertook a project to assist in developing and strengthening political parties in Sudan. EISA conducted a conflict mapping exercise in Sudan in anticipation of the forthcoming elections, which were, however, repeatedly postponed.
